Basic Emergency Management Courses
Offered by Emergency Management Ontario (EMO)

To: All St. John Branches

From: Provincial Emergency Management Committee

Once again this year we are looking at running some Basic Emergency Management courses that are offered by Emergency Management Ontario (EMO). These courses are certified courses through EMO and following successful completion the candidate with receive a certificate from EMO. This course is also the prerequisite for a number of other programs that EMO has, as well as the prerequisite for attending the Canadian Emergency Preparedness College in Ottawa.

The following TWO course dates have been tentatively set across the Province;

November 06 & 07, 2010 in Mississauga
November 27 & 28, 2010 in Stratford

We have operated these courses on a “cost recovery” basis. The instructors do not charge for their time; however we must reimburse them for mileage and hotel expenses. Depending on whether the meals and breaks are catered or not can also add to the expense but it does keep the class in-house and allows for the course to commence on time following each break and lunch. The course load is fairly heavy and it is a full two day program. The average cost (depending on student enrolment) has been between $75.00 and $100.00 dollars.

Lodging or hotel accommodations, breakfast and supper are the responsibility of the individuals attending the course. If the course is not catered, the cost will be reduced; however the cost of lunches will then also be the responsibility of the individual.

The courses will be subject to the classes being full and this is set by the size of rooms available at the hosting site. So sign up early if you are interested.

Future courses currently being planned are Incident Management Courses, Levels 100 and 200, as well as a Communications Course currently in development. It is hoped that these courses will start being offered to you in the spring of 2011.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Committee Chair (Raymond Ormerod) at 519-673-9979 (C) or 519-207-2167 (H). Or he can be reached by email at rormerod@rogers.com .

If you wish to register please email the following information to rormerod@rogers.com;

Name (first and last)
Address
Contact info (phone, email)
Preferred course location and date

Register early as these courses in the past have filled up quickly. We will establish a waiting list but all registrants are on a first come first served basis.

RTW 2010

What is RTW?
RTW is this year’s Provincial Youth Rally. Every 3 years, St. John Ambulance Council for Ontario sponsors a Provincial Youth Rally. This is a 4-day event for the Cadet/Crusader age group.

What is involved at RTW?
While we don’t like to give much away we can guarantee great fun, team building and self-challenge. Past Rally’s have included such activities such as rock climbing, ice broomball, horizontal bungee jumping, radio scavenger hunts and more! The final night is always a fantastic video dance run by professional VJ’s.

Why should my members attend RTW?
It is an opportunity for them to experience new activities, develop new skills and make many new friends from across the Ontario SJA family. It also provides the older members the chance to develop their leadership skills by participating as Group Leaders (18 yrs +) and Assistant Group Leaders (16+.) They do not have to have rank.

Do I, as a leader, need to attend RTW?
No, not really. SJA volunteers staff the Rally but, having said that, we always need adult volunteers to make this event successful. We look for adults who have both a sense of fun and a sense of responsibility. Some roles include den parent, night crawler, event leader, medical (must be nurse), or logistics. Please see the website for job descriptions www.rtw2010.ca or find us at our facebook group RTW 2010

How do I find out more about RTW?
Check out our website – www.rtw2010.ca or find us at the facebook group RTW 2010

When is it again and how much does it cost?
RTW is from July 1, 2010 to July 4, 2010 and costs all participants (both youth and adult volunteers) $99. This is the Ontario Council subsidized rate.

How do I register for RTW?
Go to the website www.rtw2010.ca, create a log in for your self – choose a name and password and complete the registration form. Once you have completed all of the required fields you will be prompted to print the form. Print the form and mail it and your money to Ontario Council. You are not actually registered until your money arrives.

When is the registration deadline for RTW?
May 14 2010 – FIRM! We have very expensive commitments and the deadline may not be extended.

Can’t wait to see you at RTW 2010!!!
The RTW Organizing Team

To SJA Branches (for immediate information sharing with all Instructors and Community Services Members) ~

SJA "Internal" Run-Off First Aid Competition

This year's Ontario Open First Aid Challenge (Competition) is being structured to include greater participation from the "finest" teams from external organizations across Ontario, while still allowing for the "finest" teams from within SJA Ontario to participate.

Members (Community Services, Instructors) from within SJA Ontario who wish to compete for a spot in the Open First Aid Challenge will be able to do so on a regional basis in the next couple of months through a SJA "Internal" Run-Off First Aid Competition.

A SJA internal run-off first aid competition for interested Community Services members and/or Instructors is currently being planned.

This SJA internal run-off first aid competition will be staged regionally, allowing for broad internal SJA participation. The top two (2) winning SJA teams in Ontario in each proposed category (Junior, Intermediate, Adult [Standard First Aid] and Adult [Advanced First Aid] - eight (8) SJA winning teams in total,) will be invited to participate in the Ontario Open First Aid Challenge being held May 1, 2010 in Hamilton (Stoney Creek), Ontario.

Information regarding the SJA internal run-off first aid competition for SJA members (Instructors, Community Services Members) will be announced shortly.

Information on the Ontario Open First Aid Challenge will also be released soon to Branches for information sharing with their external clients, organizations and agencies.

SJA Branches in Ontario – for information sharing with all youth members.

To all members involved with the SJA Youth Program.

I'd like to invite you to participate in a survey to get your feedback about our youth uniforms. This is to be completed by ALL youth leaders and as many of your youth participants as possible. Please forward this to all of the youth for whom you have an email address for. Please take time in one of your busy meetings to complete it online with your members if possible.

In order to move our program forward we need to know what the youth who wear the uniform want. Any ideas and suggestions are always welcome!

Deadline - December 1st.

2012 Council Branch-Community Services Workshops

To: Council Board, Council Committee Chairs, Branch Chairs, Branch Managers, Community Services Leaders

“Save the Date!”

In response to participant feedback from the workshops earlier this year, the 2012 Annual SJA Ontario Workshops will integrate the traditional Branch Workshop with the Community Services Workshop, and will be held Thursday March 29, Friday March 30, and Saturday March 31, 2012 at the Delta Kitchener-Waterloo Hotel, Kitchener Ontario.

These well attended and received workshops have historically been open to all Branch Chairs, Branch Managers and others, and for 2012 will be open to a broader range of Community Services representatives featuring expanded Community Services-oriented workshops. We will again be looking at networking opportunities, including a dinner evening that will incorporate the presentation of Council awards.

Council for Ontario looks forward to hosting this exciting event and to having your Branch-Community Services participate.

Regards,

Brian Cole
Director, Provincial Operations (Ontario) | National Director, Community Services
